Abstract :
Abstract— Gelatin methacryloyl (GelMA) is a popular material in tissue engineering. It is made from gelatin and methacrylic anhydride (MAA) and capable of being photocrosslinked. This is because it works well with biological systems, can be adjusted, and forms stable hydrogels. This paper talks about the usual way to make GelMA and the problems that can happen when making it in the lab. To do this, three experiments were done: (1) adding methacrylic anhydride (MAA) too quickly, resulting in an inconsistent product; (2) adding MAA slowly, which gave better control in lyophilisation but didn't fully dry because the tubes were too full; and (3) using Petri dishes, which provided more surface area and allowed for even drying in one step. An engineering analysis connects these results to how fast the reaction happens, how stable the pH is, and how well mass is transferred during freeze-drying. These results show that carefully controlling how reagents are added and how lyophilization is done is needed to make GelMA consistently.
