Simulation of Mechanical Property Changes in Biodegradable Scaffolds under Various Loading Conditions

Abstract :

Biodegradable scaffolds in tissue engineering must provide temporary mechanical support while degrading in a controlled manner to enable tissue regeneration. However, most existing analyses focus on static loading and neglect degradation-driven changes under physiological conditions. In this study, a multiphysics modeling framework was developed to evaluate scaffold performance by coupling solid mechanics, mass transport, and chemical degradation within COMSOL Multiphysics. A Schwarz cubic minimal surface scaffold with 60% porosity and 200–600 μm pore size was modeled using three polymers: polycaprolactone (PCL), polylactic acid (PLA), and poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA). Degradation was described using modified Michaelis–Menten kinetics with stress-enhanced effects. Static (0.1–2.0 MPa) and dynamic (1–10 Hz) loading scenarios were investigated. Results showed a nearly linear increase in displacement and von Mises stress with load, with maxima of 72 μm and 3.17 MPa at 200 kPa. The model provides a predictive tool for optimized scaffold design.
