Finite Element Analysis of Polyoxymethylene Hemostatic Clips: Stress Distribution and Hinge Geometry Optimization

چکیده :

Abstract— Uncontrolled intraoperative bleeding remains a critical surgical challenge. Vascular clips with their ability to rapid hemostasis, proved to be an effective solution for mentioned complications. Polyoxymethylene (POM) clips, such as Hem-o-lok, offer advantages of radiolucency and usability, yet concerns about arising stress concentrations and mechanical reliability persist. This study investigated the biomechanical performance of POM clips and the influence of hinge geometry using nonlinear finite element analysis (FEA) in ABAQUS. Four hinge designs were reconstructed from optical measurements and subjected to force- and displacement-controlled closure simulations. Results showed stress consistently localized at the hinge, with peak von Mises stresses between 76.9 and 87.9 MPa under 2 N loading. A rounded hinge profile redistributed stresses more uniformly and demonstrated superior resilience under 2 N and 3 N forces compared with the commercial design. Findings highlight hinge geometry as a critical factor for clip reliability and provide engineering insights for optimizing next-generation hemostatic clip designs.
